I have been using Saffron Blue by Rasa as my main music source these last couple of weeks. It's beautiful and has a unique Euro-Indian sound. A nice meld of spiritual and sensual… with sitar, sarangi, violin, cello, rhythm and synthesizer.

Here are samples:

Saying Hello

Hello Sacred Dancers :-)

My name is Julia and I'm a trance artist and performance dancer living in Virginia Beach. I wanted to introduce myself before I started just responding to things out of the blue. I have a really wonderful trance community out here and I'm very thankful for all the opportunities there are to work with live musicians and other dancers in this area. If you ever have the chance to come out this way it's a great place for developing yourself as a trance artist.

I'm a dance researcher and author. I focus more on the history of sacred and transcendental dance in the Mediterranean region than I do on modern or interpretive ritual dance. Right now I'm involved in a project to reconstruct the Mystery Religions of Classical Rome; that's been an adventure. I started in 2002 and I'm about a third of the way done. Oh fun!

I don't really know what else to say about myself so I suppose this is a good start. I look forward to posting and reading everyone's posts!
Private Beginner's Belly Dance Classes! Learn belly dancing from an inspiring and patient teacher!

I'd like to offer private belly dance classes for anyone who feels like they need more one-on-one instruction, privacy, patience and a teacher dedicated to spreading the joy of the dance! You'll get to work at your own pace, wear whatever you like, and be encouraged to find the beauty of the dance in your own way.

I absolutely believe in the spirituality of belly dancing, and see it the way it was meant to be seen- a beautiful act that praises life and strengthens women's bodies.

The dance will help with self-esteem, body image, flexibility, moods, and over-all well being.

Wear comfortable yoga clothes or dress up for each lesson- it’s up to you!

The schedule is absolutely flexible, and I will do my best to work out a time that works best for you- lessons can be anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours- again, it's up to you! The price will vary as to how long you want your lesson to be. To give you an idea, an hour-long lesson will be $15. However, trades can be made and I can always knock down the price if you need it. My goal is to inspire you and help you find belly dance as wonderful as I do.

Learn to relax into the art and the beauty of the dance and enjoy yourself!

Email me (Charlene) at charleneeldon@yahoo.com, or give me a call at (415) 299-1026

I look forward to hearing from you!

I am forwarding this from my email by request:

My name is Kaeshi Chai. I helped co-found a community of dancers and musicians named PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment) in 2004, since then, we have spread to many cities around the US and also to Japan. Every year, we have an annual procession where we take to the streets to spread peace and healing.

We are recruiting new NYC dancers (of different levels and disciplines) to join us for our procession this year which will take place in Brooklyn's Prospect Park during the afternoon of Saturday July 19th. We already have an incredible route planned out. To see a YouTube video of the first PURE procession please visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjmKnRGIbjo

I am teaching an introductory PURE workshop on Sunday June 1st at 440 Studios, 440 Lafayette, bet East 4th and Astor Pl, Studio 4A, NYC to share the vision and choreographies of PURE with new dancers. The cost is $30 adv/$35 at the door.

PURE's movement vocabulary is based in bellydance, flamenco, sacred circle, chinese and indian dance.

Dancers also need to be available to rehearse on Monday nights starting June 1st from 9-10.30pm also at 440 Studios, $5 for each rehearsal or $10 for the month.

To read more about PURE, visit www.puredance.org

I would really appreciate it if you could pass on this message on your list.

Peace and shimmies,
PBS Dance in America

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/shows/wolftrap/index.html

DANCE IN AMERICA: WOLF TRAP'S FACE OF AMERICA premieres on April 21, 2008 on PBS (check local listings).

Four of the country's most innovative choreographers combine the grandeur of America's national parks with the art of the camera in Dance in America: Wolf Trap's Face of America, an on-location spectacular, Monday, April 21 at 10 p.m. (ET) on Thirteen/WNET New York's GREAT PERFORMANCES on PBS (check local listings or watch the complete program online). Donald Byrd, Amelia Rudolph, Elizabeth Streb, Doug Varone, and their respective companies are joined by the U.S. Olympic Synchronized Swim Team and Hawai'i's Halau O Kekuhi in an evening of breathtaking works from Wolf Trap's acclaimed Face of America artistic adventure series.

The 90-minute compendium showcases aerial dancers off the cliffs of Yosemite National Park, synchronized swimmers underwater at Coral Reef National Monument, and follows some of the country's most exciting young dancers to Mammoth Cave, Wright Brothers National Memorial, the remains of a sugar cane plantation at Virgin Islands National Park, and the sacred terrain of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

Launched in 2000, Wolf Trap's Face of America commissions dance makers, musicians and performing artists from across the nation to explore the relationship between the natural stage and the creative process; and celebrate fellow National Parks and their cultural heritage using the language of the performing arts. The multi-year initiative of the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts has resulted in a series of world premiere, multimedia programs at Wolf Trap's Filene Center combining live performance with high-definition films of the performers on site at the parks.

"I think dance works well to tell the story," says Terrence Jones, president and CEO of the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia. "It's a medium that has incredible flexibility and with each choreographer a different sense of imagination and spirit."

Featured are Amelia Rudolph and Project Bandaloop at Yosemite with the music of Native American flutist Robert Mirabal; Donald Byrd and members of his troupe with jazz composer/musician Steve Turre at Virgin Islands National Park; Doug Varone interpreting the songs of country music singer Patti Loveless at Kentucky's Mammoth Cave National Park; and Elizabeth Streb celebrating the centennial of flight at Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk. Halau O Kekuhi chants and dances at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, while the Olympic Synchronized Swim Team salutes the aquatic life of Coral Reef National Monument.

Dance in America: Wolf Trap's Face of America is a production of Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts in association with Thirteen/WNET New York. It is produced, directed and edited by Joe Bruncsak and Walter Rissmeyer at Blue Land Media. Vincent Gancie is responsible for the stunning photography.

Earthdance was conceived in 1996 by artist/musician Chris Deckker, as a vision to unite the whole world through the universal platform of dance and music. Earthdance has now become the largest global synchronized dance event in the world.

What began in 1997, with 22 cities in 18 countries has now occurred in over 360 locations with 340 locations in 57 countries participating in 2006 alone! Rising out of the global electronic music scene, Earthdance has now grown to include a diverse cross-section of musical genres including world music, jazz, conscious hip-hop, folk and reggae.

Earthdance has shown how the potent combination of music, dance and technology can be harnessed for positive and humanitarian aims. For one night all around the globe, people join together to dance as one global community, united with a common vision for peace and humanitarian aims.

Every year, Earthdance continues to grow in volume and scope. This year we are gearing up to include as many people on the planet as possible through a number of new initiatives and by making the Prayer for Peace track available to everyone.

out of control with "no touch" policy in schools?

Touching is an essential part to healthy human development and expression. However, in attempt to keep safety and order officials at Kilmer Middle School in Vienna, VA have made all touching against the rules. This is extremely detrimental to normal psychological development. In addition, it is avoidance of common adolescence problems, and is miseducating the students on what is appropriate. Help convince the school officials to find a better way to educate and support their students!

I have developed a petition via the care2.com petition site so we can help this school board discover better options. I am so grateful for all the work our public schools do, but feel they need our help sometimes, too. I hope this petition will become a catalyst for other public schools that informally have this as a policy.

Please read, sign, and pass on (at least pass on to those who may be interested). Thank you!
Insight on Contemporary Trance Dance

Ritual Ethnology and Spirituality

~~ By Ryan Giordano ~~

“[trance dancing] a divine vessel for personal and global transformation through ceremony, dance, music, light, food and personal interaction.” -Robin Sylvan (1)

Throughout all of time, the human species has combined the sonic driving of rhythmic and repetitious drumbeats with ecstatic dance to induce trance states which facilitate a transition between ordinary reality and spiritual community. Inherent in the human condition, trance dancing directly relates to a person's absolute being and conceptualization of the self. These trance dance rituals enable people with spiritual connectivity as well as define them culturally. Trance dancing exists as a tribal societal function which allows the participants to come together in dance and celebration for primary religious experience, spiritual growth, and community (Sylvan, Trance, 1). Trance dance theology is enacted in ritual, as it is displayed with careful consideration and specific intent. The trance dance ritual becomes a working part of the community and serves its function like a rite of passage or spiritual quest.

Ghostdance Movement

Interested to learn more about this Native American movement and what became of it. Here's what i found so far asking the google god:

http://www.webcoves.com/circles/ghost.html

History of the GHOSTDANCE
The Ghostdance has its origins about 150 years ago, when the Native American peoples were still free. They were nomadic people, moving with the seasons, the buffalo and their guiding spirits. The tribespeople lived in close communion with nature. Tribes varied and celebrated their differences, had their own folklore, beliefs, customs and were free to do so.

America, to the western mind was property to be acquired. Missionaries and others with "compassion" felt that the indigenous peoples - Indians - must be civilized. Many others just wanted them destroyed. The nomadic lifestyle of the Indians clashed with notions of property ownership and governance of the people. And as the White Man moved ever westward, more and more land was "claimed" for ownership, leaving the Indian tribespeople bewildered. The new government "reserved" the poorest acreage for the "Red people" to live upon. No more were they free to follow the buffalo. Diverse tribes were herded into these 'reservations' to much anger and discontent. But the White Man was afraid of these gathered peoples whom they viewed as evil savages.

General Sherman lead a campaign to quell those tribes who were not accepting the reservations. "The only good indians I ever saw were dead" Sherman is quoted as having written to his brother. This changed slightly to become the all-too-popular expression of Anti-Indian prejudice:" The only good Indian is a dead Indian". This campaign was known as 'The Campaign of Extermination' and General Sherman pursued his goals with intense hatred for the Red peoples. Many died who tried to fight back. The Indian Nations were effectively cowed - their spirit broken and morale gone - by the late 1880's.

However, a Sioux shaman would make a journey to the south, and there he would learn the Ghostdance. He visited the Peiote tribe, meeting another shaman who told him to gaze within a hat. He claimed he began walking in another world: The Old World. This was the world before the white man came and took the land and the buffalo away. The great herds roamed free and the tribes after them. The shaman was able to walk with the ghosts of the ancestors and they taught him this chant and the dance that goes with it.

(One of many variations):
I Circle Around, I Circle Around The Boundaries Of the Earth..
I Circle Around, I Circle Around The Boundaries Of the Earth
HEYA HEYA HEYA HEYA
Wearing my long brown feathers as I fly...
Wearing my long brown feathers as I fly...

The shaman brought this dance back to the Sioux People. Gathering them at one place, he told them that if they purified themselves and then danced this dance, the new (White Man's ) world, with all its corruption, would just roll up. Underneath would be the Old World as it had always been. He gave the people white shirts, emblazoned with the sun, the stars, and the moon upon them. These were believed to be magical, the white man's bullets would not be able to pierce them. The Sioux went to the sweat lodges and performed purification rituals. Then they put on their white shirts and danced around a pine tree. They linked hands in a huge circle, dancing around first in one direction, then the other. With the "Heya(s)" they stamped their feet. Spreading their arms like wings, they whirled around as they sang the last two lines. In time to the chanting, they repeated the dance cycle again and again.

News of it spread and across North America, tribes started dancing their own Ghostdances. The Ghostdance grew among the various tribes, with larger and larger numbers, and the tribespeople became more certain that the Old World was coming back. By dancing they would become free again. But the American government got nervous. Hundreds of discontented Indians, gathering in such numbers, and with such strong sense of identity sounded too dangerous. In 1890 more than 250 Sioux men, women and children gathered together and began Ghostdancing . They were at a place called Wounded Knee Creek. General Sherman arrived with his troops, and seeing the dancers, opened fire on them.

... all but a few of the Ghostdancers were massacred...

But now, 150 years later, the Ghostdance again is gathering momentum. It is still is believed that if enough people join, maybe the door can be opened to remake our world and bring back the lands of our ancestors. And again, the American government worries about Ghostdancers.

I am interested in Meditation, tantra, Goddess Rituals, ecstatic dance or traditional dance and music (harmonium and vocal). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's really a simple story Beings find planet. Beings treat planet badly. Planet goes about her business. Beings start to realize that they need planet, and had best learn to make friends rather than futilely keeping up enmity.

Gaea: A Ritual Performance

layers of imagery, music, tribal drums, futuristic dreams

Gaea was there, in the beginning. Gaea was all. Gaea was wise.
How could we not have seen, in the blindness of pride, of avarice,
of service pledged to false gods?

The journey was long.
The journey was cold.
The journey was lonely.

Asleep in a box with wilderness dreams. Or awake on the watch, wondering what was to come.

Thus it was those false gods bespake us: Out of the cold vastness of space and time,
out of the fear that was all the companion we knew,
out of a need to make it all Someone else's responsibility,
out of a need to believe all would be well for our kind.

Our planet was dying.
We did what we could to survive.
Survival we find
an appopriate end
to any means.
Survival will give us
the time we need
to find a better way
to survive.

The strongest of us,
the proudest of us,
the meanest of us,
would not allow us to die.
We took off in our ship with the barest of plans

to find another land
where our kind could live ...
expand.

Now,
hybrid children evolved
from refugees
fleeing a hostile star.
Skygods and Earth Mother of ancient lore.

It's time we relinquish fear and hatred, accept Gaea as partner and home
that we may all live and thrive.

The land, when we found her was so warm and inviting.
We felt safe, supported, encouraged to grow.

We ate of her fruit and her herds.
We built with her trees, stone and clay.
We drank from her cool crystal streams which we soiled with our waste.
Gaea was saviour and womb.
We repaid her with rape.

We didn't understand,
thought her merely land,
thought ourselves masters from afar.

Gaea sent storms to bring us to our senses, wild winds and seas.

Gaea tried to shake us off: Earthquakes, Floods, Famine, Plagues
sending us scattering into hiding. Intermingling with her primates, Gaea's children.
Without question or shame, we murdered what we could not steal.
Without honor or remorse, we laid waste to our host, to our adopted home,
then cursed her for not giving more.

By accident or design, chimera adapting to Gaea's marketplace creating
new ways to define our origins from outer space
We lied to our halfling children, denigrated their Gaean kin,
twisted their virtues into a false concept that we called "sin."

What Gaea did to us? Cruel, evil, in need of the whip.
we seal over her bounty
into mad parody of Mother Ship.
Unforgiving of the mess of living, the miracles of life.
In our ignorant pride we gave ourselves law to decide
propriety over fate
turning
in our minds
mother love
into a mirror of hate.

Frozen in fear and rage, children swept out in the storm,
trapped in a self-made cage we had hoped to protect us from harm.

Gaea, we cry, why do you treat us so angrily?
What will it take for us to wake up and see it is we who are wrong?
To hear and be aware of Gaea's song singing in our blood?
To learn the cycles, the seasons, the reasons for fire, wind and flood?

To redefine our race, to find out that our place is here among our Gaean kin?

The telling of new tale must begin.

Gaea opens to sunshine to ease our agitation
Easy winds, easy gushing of summer rain
Feeding the greedy young grains,
growing along the plains, the flowers of the storm.
Feeding the beasts of the field,
continuing the cycle, as all is revealed.

Love is the web,
craftily spun by great mother spider,
Gaea's familiar,
weaving magestic grace
no longer concealed. It was never our place
to control, nor others' to steal.

Gaea creates in intricate arrangements,
feeding us all of us all, a transformative stew.
So much energy wasted; painful lies to find our way through
our beings to create such beautiful
children, reaching out to become and be free,
enjoying our destiny,
as Gaea's beloved.

Arising in the circle, giving voice to pain -- grateful to Gaea's grace, dancing in her cleansing rain,
we sing in voice united:

It would be so nice (paradise)
You and I
Floating in the sunlight
Ready to break free
To be
Exactly who we are.

Imagine that this fluid motion connects you to the physical experience of living more fully and loving more deeply.

The 5Rhythms is a physical approach towards real and tangible connection to our selves, to each other and to our own place in life. In the dance, we create the possibility of rediscovering ourselves in our natural state of being, a body in motion. We cultivate our ability to move fluidly with the rhythms of our lives, the people in our lives and the world we live in. By moving fluidly with all of who we are we cultivate our ability to live more fully and love more deeply.

Here is a short video project that Jeffe and I did a few days ago. It is an expression of my desire to be healed and return to dancing more fully, but really I have to examine what that means and realize that if I am never fully healed, that will also be ok because dance can take infinite forms. Jeffe filmed, I danced and edited the footage.

Earthdance this weekend

http://www.earthdance.org/sf/

WHAT IS EARTHDANCE?

The Earthdance event in Laytonville is one of over 222 global events
celebrating peace on September 16, 2006

Earthdance, the Global Dance Festival for Peace has grown to become the world's largest simultaneous music and dance event. Founded in 1997, with 22 cities and 18 countries participating, Earthdance events have occurred in over 240 cities in 50 countries, with locations ranging from the club-lands of New York to the rainforests of Brazil. Every year, in alignment with the International Day of Peace, over 200,000 people unite in dance with hundreds of thousands more joining online in support of global peace and humanitarian aims.

The defining moment of each Earthdance event is a synchronized link-up, (4pm Pacific Standard Time) when every event around the world plays a specially produced song called "The Prayer for Peace" at exactly the same time.

Earthdance has been described by the music industry as the "Dance Aid" for the new millennium. The aim of the event is to bring together global communities to create a synchronized global festival and dance event to help fund humanitarian causes and develop an environment of peace throughout the global community.

Please visit the Earthdance International Website at: http://www.earthdance.org to see what cities are paritciating in 2006, to find out which charities are being supported, and to find out more about the Global Webcast.

Shambhala Festival Prayerformance & Workshop (notes)

This past summer at Shambhala Festival in BC, i took part in both an opening prayerformance for the Portal Stage as well as facilitated a workshop called Shambhala Warrior Activation. I was inspired by someone's post about Storytelling and Ritual Dance to share my own reflections.

For the past 3 years I have felt the call to do something with the inspiration that comes from the mythology around the kingdom of Shambhala and its citizens in relation to this festival typically associated with large scale debauchery. As i studied the myth, discussed it with a small number of interested others, it came alive in me. I wrote script ideas and sought out others interested in doing this together at the festival. Interestingly however, few seemed to give it the time to go deeper, nor did they commit to this the way i had hoped. As it turned out, the universe made this come about in a much more practical manner, through a friend who got appointed the project leader. Being able to let go of total control over the vision and surrender to their lead while still being giving of the ideas i held brought about a great reward. To be attatched to ownership of vision and execution for such a thing as a Shambhala Warrior myth made so much sense in hindsight. Instinctively i knew that i had to let the story find its own way to be told.

A lot of elements did manage to make it in however. I tell this storyline for the sake of interest to those who create sacred dance/theater. We don't get to dialogue about such things often enough. The story we worked with was of festival goers who go to the Shambhala Festival and start experiencing awakenings through their dance which result in synchronicities as they discover others also sharing profound awakenings. Through the unity that develops amongst a small group of people a portal to Shambhala is opened that allows the Shambhala Warriors to enter who share basic teachings that allow the kingdom of Shambhala to re-emerge.

This was done with recorded narration which was I think hard to hear. I think if you're going to do voice over narration it has to sound like God on the mic- loud and not too lost in the ambient music like some subliminal dream message. Then again, maybe that's more effective. The Shambhala Warriors were on stilts and portrayed by friends in the Mythmakers. They were great tho for me this was not the way to portray the citizens of Shambhala, who are said to be only visible when you resonate at a high enough frequency. I was hoping they could be more suggested than revealed. But that's some fancy staging. I had wondered about daytime shadow puppety like i've read about in Indonesia.

I ended up playing a festival goer and during the prayerformance aimed to experience the story rather than try to act it, to embody rather than role play. Hard to do when you are essentially performing. I wanted to make this piece more interactive and less about spectating. Not an easy feat. I'd like to know ways people have succeeded in tearing down the 4th wall without sacrificing the content of their message.

Fortunately i also had an hour for a workshop the next day that allowed me to present various elements of the Shambhala myth as food for thought about how we can use a festival as a container for developing a stronger spiritual center which can be projected into the world. All while having the time of our lives. For a portion of the workshop we used the Portal Stage dancefloor as an area to practice dancefloor dynamics that bring our attention into varied focuses that snap us out of robot and put the angel in control. Then when the workshop ended we launched over to the Living Room stage for Shphongle's performance. How powerful that was for me.

During that performance Brother from Santa Cruz presented me with a book titled " The Way to Shambhala" which he had just finished with. Even more food for inspiration comes flooding in when i read this book. So hopefully in 2007 there will be another version of the prayerformance and the workshop- i feel each year is a chance to practice, to develop and refine what i am doing with festivals. Festivals, a culture crafters friend.

We're all doing it. Keep at it.

ritual dance woven with storytelling

greetings family- i am inspired to share with you our most recent dancing ritual- we had a storyteller (narrator) and first we started off with what has become tradition for us and that is our elemental dance where each one of us dancers invokes the element with our dance- air-fire-water-earth and spirit (if we have 5 willing dancers)-- and then the storyteller began to weave the story of how the children of the earth were crying out for guidance and wisdom thru their tears of pain and frustration- and the goddesses came together to answer these cries- they held council together to find the way of helping earth's children--each dancer (4 of us) took our turns as each goddess was invoked thru dance and the telling of her story--( these invocations were amazingly powerful- the goddess comes thru the dance so clearly) we invoked Anath, Durga, Isis, and Yemaya-- each one of us dancers wrote these stories/invocations as a group (with exception of Anath) and then when each goddess danced thru us and her presence invoked-we did a circle dance and in silence (without narration) and in our turns each goddess gave a gift to the children of earth and we placed these very physical offerings on our altar-- Anath gave the gift of grain to feed each other nourishment-- Durga offered to sword of truth-- Isis gave the ankh, the gift of life-- and Yemaya gave us the gift of cleansing water to wash away all that no longer serves us--- and that was our dance-------- when i first visualized this i saw it a bit different but then spirit began to weave magick into our spontaneous dancing circles as we dancers talked about it more and as it was really starting to take form i started to wonder "if the audience would get it, if people would find it boring as it wasn't as fast as our Gypsy show" but it was amazing how deeply touched our audience was-- profound was a word used by many to describe their experience- and many, many related how the narration took the dance and music to another level--also i just want to share that as we sisters were calling the elements - to call in the spirits below we all bowed down facing the center and each other and our fingers touched and we wove them together and we all felt a "spark"- then at the end of the dance when we opened our circle we found ourselves doing the same thing- bowing down facing each other and the center and our fingers touched and the spark so strong that all of us took a breath in that moment together and Blessed Be flowed from our lips in unison-- ahh true spontaneous magick takes your breath away and then gives it back more fully-- please share your stories to inspire me

"Dancing with Rumi" Weekend Ecstatic Dance Workshop in Dallas

Dancing with Rumi: Moving with the Beloved
with Ellen Watson

Friday, September 15, 7-10p; Saturday, September 16, 1:30-8p; Sunday, September 17, 1:30-4:30p
$140 early registration by August 30, $160 after August 30 or at the door, $35 Friday night only

In this weekend workshop, Ellen invites you to find the poet inside, engaging in the ancient spiritual practice of ecstatic dance in order to release what has been deeply held in your body and heart. This practice will open the door to your own inspiration, that land where the divine comes through you.

This workshop has been inspired by the poems on connection to divine love by Rumi, Hafiz, and other Sufi poets. The beloved poet Rumi was the world’s first “Whirling Dervish,” spinning himself into a state of ecstatic union with the divine. The word “dervish” in Persian means doorway. Dancing with Rumi will use the structure of the 5Rhythms™ ecstatic dance practice to introduce the seven doorways or portals to the realm of the ecstatic dancer and poet. These doorways are related to the seven chakras, the wheels of energy in the body that support, in order: grounded, creative, powerful, heart-full, truth-full, visionary and conscious living. Activating the energy of the seven chakras through ecstatic dance will cleanse and open your body, heart and mind.

With Ellen’s compassionate and experienced guidance, we’ll learn to spin ourselves into the deepest cores of our selves, discovering where we hold energy and how to release control of this powerful part of ourselves. Children are natural spinners, and we also can relearn to engage this simple and powerful tool for transforming our energy. On empty stomachs we will relearn to enjoy dizziness, to go through the doorway of dizziness and enter the land of childlike glee in the present moment, the world of Rumi and the whirling dervishes.

This workshop is open to all levels of experience. Come ready to investigate the power of your being as we create a sacred space together. We’ll share our favorite ecstatic poetry, move, talk, meditate and journal together. Be prepared to move and be moved by your Spirit.

The workshop will begin on Friday 7-10 pm with an introduction and opening dance. Guests who are not participating in the full workshop are welcome to join us on Friday evening for $35.

Ecstatic - Dancing with Others Beyond the Body

I am interested in hearing feedback from others on the idea of the ecstatic union of dance in which we dance with others, but not necessarily in physical proximity to one another. It seems that every time I go to an ecstatic dance class, no matter who the teacher is, they always have this thing about wanting people to pair up and group up and dance together in a way that doesn't feel as "together" to me as when I take the inner path to find the union where once there were ideas like "me" and "you."

Am I making this clear? Why would one need to dance together as bodies in a class that is about using the body to transcend the illusion of separate bodies? It totally pulls me out of my trance/ecstatic state to have to go through these "exercises" and I also resent the attitude that I sometimes pick up on from teachers who assume there is something anti-social or shy about not wanting to dance with the other people in the room in terms of physically interacting. I feel like I dance with everyone in the room if I can get deep enough inside myself to find the place beyond boundaries. I'm actually a super outgoing person and never hesitate to approach strangers at parties or any social setting that is about interacting at that level, but I don't go to ecstatic dance happenings for that everyday level of interaction.

Does anyone relate?

June 06 Astro Update by Mark S. McNutt

Astrological Update for end May, June 2006
Soli-Lunar Astrology for Gemini New Moon

In this column, we follow the transits of the planets beginning with the New Moon.
There are 13 or 14 New Moons in a year, not 12, so there will be the same number of these columns as we follow a soul based, feeling oriented, and more natural calendar regarding our earthly cycles (not oriented toward the archaic and awkward calendar that has confused things since the Romans imposed it on this world long ago).

Transits for 5/26-6/25

We begin with a New Moon in Gemini, which is the sign of communication, education, people, and ideas. It’s also a sign of contradiction, so we can expect contradictory behaviors, decisions, and communications in the coming month. Mercury will be in Gemini (but not conjunct Sun or Moon) and it will also square Uranus. This implies the potential for unpredictable scattering of energy that is akin to herding cats, and plans that are made during this time will be highly idealist and innovative, but fluffy in outcome and perhaps bearing little fruit. In my last column, I mentioned the powerful potential for profound change that would move thru during mid-May. So, if you didn’t initiate during that time, it may become harder to focus and carry thru at this time (especially if strong in Virgo or Pisces, i.e., Sun. Moon. Rising). If you were born under the Gemini influence (or other air signs) this flutter-by energy could seem like a breath of fresh summer air, full of ideas and potential, and some of us thrive on that! There is not much support for the earth signs here, at least until Venus enters Taurus on May 30th, then a greater commitment and beauty can ensue. In fact, as this lunation describes so much variety, a survey of all of our greatest hits and some of our fears will be passing in front of our eyes for us to let go of or address. But Venus in Taurus in combination with this "diffuse cornucopia" can give direction thru social life, pleasures, and beauty. Take advantage of this early and often.
As this month is such a mixed bag of aspects with little focus early on, the expression and energy will be different for each individual, and hard to describe in a comprehensive manner that will ring true for us all. There are a few coalescing aspects coming up in June that are decisive and describable. As Venus transits thru Taurus 5/30-6/24, it moves into alignment with Jupiter and Saturn (conjunct) Mars, forming a T square, which is usually stressful for most. Jupiter is retrograde in Scorpio having to do with an abundance of transformation, emotion, and strong life passages. This journey of Jupiter's is year long. Saturn in Leo has the potentially confusing contradiction of serious commitment and fun and sometimes can constrict the joy of this sign. Mars joins Saturn in Leo on 6/2, and these are in conjunction or similar position in the middle of the month. This can be excellent for providing motivation and drive toward pleasure, love, and identifying your own desires in order to take action.
While this can be a positive force toward accomplishment, Venus and Jupiter both pull on this, along with the Moon at various points, as well as Neptune later in July. Since Jupiter has to do with abundance and Venus with pleasure, beauty, finance, it is easy to go overboard, over-indulge, over spend, or scatter energy thru either determination or indulgence. For those who don’t desire drama in their personal lives, I advise a more conservative approach without fixed expectations. To the rest of us, the contradictions found in the fixed polarity of this time will certainly gives us a lot to be dramatic about. Certainly, do not try to stop the mountain from moving, the flood from occurring, or your lover from leaving thru sheer determination as this is where the conflict arises. For those of us who enjoy the Chinese paradigm of “may be good, May be bad” choices and results, we can have the times of our lives. Beyond this, the effects will be very individualized with lots of stories to unfold. May we live in interesting times!
The retrograde of Jupiter will slow to a stop July, so whatever is undone in June is redone and integrated in the hot summer sun.
The dust settles only after the Summer Solstice (Wed. 6/21 5:46 am pdt), which is also the last few days of the Moon cycle. This implies introversion and souls searching 6/21-5 even as the summer sun is stimulating in joyful communion- again in contrast. In fact, the solstice day is one in which the Moon aligns again into a T-square with Jupiter and Saturn. Many of the emotional aspects brought up by the cacophony of contradictory planetary voices will be resolved during the next lunation, so stay tuned.
Also of note is the retrograde of Uranus and Neptune. Retrogrades are the apparent backward motions of planets as seen from Earth. The outer planets do this for 5 months out of the year, and stationary or not moving for a few weeks on either side of that. The stationary times are more significant than the retrogrades are, as a laser beam is to light.
Neptune begins its yearly retrograde 5/23,implying more of what was stated at the beginning of this column regarding great ideas dissolving into committees, discussion groups, and frustrating action. Similarly, Uranus retrograde beginning 6/19 could dissolve and diffuse the group vision into many diverse and divergent pathways. For some, this can also provided serendipitous openings. These are not dire aspects, but they do have the potential for “following thru with the plan”, whatever it was.
Speaking of diffusion, there are endless aspects to describe for the coming month, but again each individual will experience them differently. Clear intention helps.

Astrology works on many levels and we can peel back the layers to revel ever-deeper aspects of ourselves and the truth of our being. If you would like to have a deeper reading of how these and other planetary transits affect you, contact me, Mark S. McNutt, for a personal reading.

music questions

The thread on raves made me want to ask more questions about music. Much of the trance music I have listened to is much too repetitive to keep me interested very long. I don’t know if I have been to what some of you would consider a ‘real rave,’ but I have done and led lots of ecstatic dances/improv dances/dance jams. The events dubbed as raves that I have been to: a large group of people staring at the speakers and bouncing up and down in place to a deep repetitive beat. Not very interesting dance to me as a dancer, and not very interesting music to my ear.

I am always searching for music that is both easily danceable, i.e. invites newcomers to move freely, but also rich enough to inspire creativity in people who have been moving for a long time. I like music with interesting texture and multiple beat levels. I like electronica, but very little of what is label ‘trance’ interests me.

Are people willing to share their play lists? Tell us about your music and what you like about it, how it opens and and inspire your dance? Comment on what worked and what didn't in your music mixes? I'll start:

A recent playlist from a 'Barefoot Boogie' in Corvallis Oregon
Priya, Michael Mandrel (Anjali): beautiful Indian slow flowing piece
Sun rise in peace, David and Steve Gordon, drumming
House of the Ancestors, AfroCelt Sound System, easy to dance to, fun
El Son reggae, Les Nubians, almost to predictable, probably won’t use again
Sure Shot, Beastie Boys, I love this, easy to dance too, but too intense for some
Honey, Moby, great! Lots of texture and creativity here
Ny-Hymne, Les Nubians, short beautiful dance piece
Wsuze Otya, Samite, great easy to dance to, happy
Pacha Mama, Hamsa Lila, a little dead in this line up
Run On, Moby, Fun, but I shouldn’t have repeated Moby, it was too similar
Hasta Luego Mi Hermano, Dubtribe Soundsystem, great, lots of texture, a faster one might have been better here
Whatever Lola Wants, Verve Remix by Gotan Project, just fun, lots of drama

Intersection -- A New Tribe

There are many parallels and intersections between Hinduism and Buddhism. This tribe has started of the acknowledgement of similarities, as well as differences between these two traditions. In a society and historical time where so many cultures are all coming to meet one another at the dinner table, many practioners may feel drawn to different aspects of Hinduism and Buddhism. This tribe has been created in honor of both traditions as a space where discussion can occur respectfully and freely about these spiritual philosophies, as well as what its like to draw one's practice from these two different paths. Feel free to bring up teachers and sources of inspiration to you in Buddhism (all its forms....Tibetan, Zen...), Yoga, Martial Arts, Ayurveda, Rumi, Hafiz, Kabir, Shamanic practices, modern day teachers such as Eckhart Tolle and David Deida, science of Siegal and Goleman, Zen Therapy, Transpersonal Psychology, Somatic Psychology, Carl Jung. Where do we all draw from and how does it all fit together???? Let's meet at the intersection....

May Astro Update by Mark S. McNutt

Astrological Update for May 2006
(Soli Lunar New Moon in Taurus beginning April 27th)

The dance of the planets continues! Even when we deny or ignore their influences, we find that our magnetism and watery bodies continue to draw influences from our immediate environment and the subtle influences of the cosmos beyond. The microcosm of our selves reflects the macrocosm.
As this eclipse month ends, a little known fault near Salem OR gives a shudder as if to say, ”Yes!” even Gaia, the world Spirit herself, is aware of the alignment of Sun and Moon.
The new moon defines the area of focus for the month, which then unfolds in potential for the first two weeks and then releases that potential (as defined by the full moon) over the following two weeks. All the while, the other 8 planets continue in their spiral dance to unfold our personal and planetary journey.
This new moon begins 4/27 at 12:44 pm PDT (West Coast US time) with Sun and Moon in Taurus. Taurus has to do with the Earth and Her resources, physical plane, body awareness, material goods, land, wealth, and all that is tangible and measurable, as well as the artistic and beautiful. It is no coincidence that the ancients observed the connection between this earth sign and the joy of the Earth’s creation through flowers and growth of all that is green.
Energy radiates from the middle of the fixed signs outward. That is, midseason is the embodiment of the season. Spring, is described best by Beltane (the good time) and the flowing propagation of the Earth, than the firey newness of Aries. Summer, is described best by the midseason fires of Leo and Lammas in August than by the watery homebody sign of Cancer. Fall is described best by the intense and watery mystery of Scorpio and Samhain than by the balance of airy Libra. Winter begins with Capricorn but the airy potential of Aquarius and Imbolc speaks of the return of light, social life, and the rekindling new ideas.
So, this Taurean mid-season time, is the time for planting and being with nature, and especially for being true to our natures! The more we embrace what is natural for our body and being during this time, the more we manifest what is natural and healthy for us. Be aware of the abundance concerning our physical bodies and the environment, acquisition of goods and structures, the planting and the cultivation of gardens, and the magickal connection with nature. Garden, build, go for walks, and spend as much time as possible at the ultimate website...TheNaturalWorld.net.
The full moon on 5/13 will bring forth a tidal wave of emotions and intense passions to a peak that is very powerful for moving energy; Jupiter and Uranus add to this. Ground yourself and ride the wave, trusting your emotions and knowing that your mission will have tangible results in May and beyond.
Beginning the evening of 5/20, the Sun will move into the airy sign Gemini, bringing intellect and fanciful wings for networking the new ideas that are born of the strong roots available now. The plant is only as strong as its’ roots, so focus before 5/20 on growing and nourishing whatever those roots are. Otherwise, those plants (that is, your ideas and strategy) may become top heavy from too much talk and not enough walk. Don't let your focus dissipate and dry out, water your emotions heavily in mid month.
Jupiter and Uranus are in the water signs of Scorpio and Pisces respectively, and are in trine, a favorable aspect, all month. This is excellent for new ideas and friendships, and creativity coming out of the blue with mostly positive and highly predictable results. We can expect old friends to arrive or contact us over the airwaves from far away places. As well, we can expect extended generosity to unexpectedly be returned. Karma is its’ own reward or dilemma, as we reap what we sow in a surprising manner.
Spontaneous travel is highly encouraged, as are serendipitous changes of plan. Endeavor to do, think or plan something that is original. It’s time, in the second half of month, to climb out of the box of self-limiting choices! The dreaminess of Neptune in Aquarius further encourages this, even as it slows down to begin its’ yearly retrograde (5/23). This implies "Get going!" on your new activities before 5/20, as the end of the month is best used for herding all of the cats that you’ve spontaneously decided to take on. The end of the month energy is very mental and diffused, but air signs love that playing field.
Mars in Cancer denotes aggressive nurturing of home and family situations, and feelings which suddenly come to the forefront, especially under that time of the “visible full moon” in mid month, which dissolves into more mental and social juggling around 5/20. A great shift occurs from 5/12-20. Be flexible and creative. Explore your feelings and the mind will follow.
Expect love and relations to be impulsive and immediate but not necessarily lasting. Even as you are building new bridges, exploring deep feelings and attachments, and feeling out what you value most, it changes again with the next lunation at the end of the month; so remember what grounds and roots you and return there.
We present this column every lunation or new moon, as a service and by popular request.
Astrology works on many, many levels and we can peel back the layers to revel ever-deeper aspects of ourselves and the truth of our being. If you would like to have a more in-depth reading of how these and other planetary transits affect you, contact me, Mark S. McNutt, for a personal reading.

I'm an improvisational dancer planning on developing sacred contact improvsation classes in Seattle and am checking on interests.

Also, interested in holding discussions with any artists on what it means to have sacredness in your art, and people interested in coming together under one roof to teach this.

Any directions towards groups or individuals or exisiting organizations that focus on sacred art and ritual? (outside random gatherings for dance, but instructed)

Thanks! God's peace!

What do you think of Ravers?

You aren't going to find many or hardly any professional dancers in the rave scene and is rave dancing a thing that ravers do on drugs or is it a dance movement (that was strongest around y2k and has been slowly dying)?
The beats are awesome, but forget them, like, the dancing. Has it won favour from the Gods, or is it just a fad?
Most ravers aren't commited to the dance scene, which, in general, IS the rave scene. So, it could be a fad. Do ravers know how to dance? I think most of them don't. I think most dancers DON'T CARE about the rave scene, and fewer and fewer people and discovering sacred dance through the rave scene.

Dreamdance Tuesdays SF

This Tuesday March 28 is New Moon dreamdance at 848 Divisadero. Now dreamdance is every second and fourth Tuesday of the month in SF.
This tuesdays dreamdance will be coming in on the new moon in aries and also on the
cusp of the total solar eclipse! Here are some links for info on the new moon to
help resonate your intentions with:

astrowisdom.com/moonmessages.htm
astrowisdom.com/thisnewmoon.htm
www.exploratorium.edu/eclipse...dex.html

Please join us in dance ritual for this potent evening!

Dreamdance is a sacred healing ritual dance ceremony, an intimate ritual workshop
designed to promote deep healing through the use of intention, a blindfold, and
breathing techniques that induce a state of trance and transformation. We aim at
cultivating healing through a dance movement meditation. These shamanic dance
rituals, are offered as a sacred
opportunity to explore an inner realm of body-mind consciousness through the very
focused use of spiritual intention,
infused powerfully into the body with the overwhelming force of spirit breath.
Here, the ecstatic trance dancer courageously dances into the shadow lands of
seeming limitation, into the darkness of personal fears and judgments, by using a
blindfold to remove all sense of outer vision, thereby allowing the dancer to fully
direct awareness inward and remove the mask of ego. The journey is safely nurtured
and guided by the healing surround of compelling musical sound-scapes, shamanically
blended with deep organic tribal electronic world rhythms and fused with Spiritual
Technology, to propel and profoundly induce an altered-state of inter-dimensional
trance..... a divine tribal earth dance pulsing to spiraling kundalini motions
within.

We do dreamdance ritual the 2nd and 4th tuesday of every month at: De Moolam 848
Divisidero St (@Fulton) San Francisco CA

I'm going on tour to turkey/Egypt Spain England with the Nectar temple tour. We're setting up the chill out zone and temple at festivals in Europe, starting with the solar eclipse in Turkey.
I'm looking for a belly dance teacher in these countries. Anyone know any amazing ones with good heart?

We're also lookin to align with other freaks and communities, possibly do some collaborations, throw down some fat beats, do some street performance. Fire, stiltwalking, prayerformance, sacred dance.

Does anyone have any contacts or advice on other circus freaks and visionaries in these countries?

Please respond to me personallly if possible.

gracias Natalia

CALL OUT: Portland and LA Sacred Dancers

This is a call out to my sacred dancer kin in the Portland and Los Angeles area codes. As a promoter/participant with Ekstasis Dance (www.ekstasisdance.com) on behalf of my friend Luna Ravenchild I am putting it out there about an opportunity to partake in a weekend long intensive in Kundalini Dance(www.kundalini-dance.com). This form, a nice companion to Gabrielle Roth's Ecstatic Dance continues Luna's sacred dance facilitation which began with the 5 Rhythms. This system, synthesized in its modern form by Antara Decker, integrates awakening the kundalini and moving it through the chakra's is melded with the sounds of the electronic underground. Accompanying Luna is her partner DJ Solus. Currently Luna is the sole facilitator of Kundalini Dance journeys in North America.

Since I am promoting remotely from BC i would like to call upon dancers who are interested in Kundalini Dance as possible participants to assist me in outreaching to your kin who may be interested in this offering. Help with postering will reduce your registration fee(more details available). Anyone who has taken this workshop is welcome to share comments bellow!
Portland dates are Friday May 12-14 at the Awakenings Community Room ( studio.awakenings.cc/ )

LA dates have yet to be set but looking at either of the 1st 2 weeks of June as possibilities.

Ideally we would like a minimum of 10 pre-registered people to feel assured that things are ready to happen. For past workshop and dance events put on by Ekstasis Dance look at:

www.tribalharmonix.org/events...59.html
www.tribalharmonix.org/events...40.html

Festival and event organizers we are also interested in continuing to bring Kundalini Dance shorter workshops to these environments and have done so at Journey of the Shaman (Oracle Gathering), Shambhala Festival (where it returns again this summer),Mage Festival, and the Intention Retreat. Please contact me for an info package.

Thanks to all who have participated already in Kundalini Dance and have shared that experience. We hope to share it with many more!

Hi Luna...

I feel compelled to mention again that I am especially grateful to have been part of the transformational esctatic dance experience channeled through you.

I also would like to say that I am inspired by what I see to be a deep commitment to your service. I can honestly say that I hope that we can work together in the future.

It is an honor to be in your presence.

I have had the wonderfull opportunity to get to know this Beautifull, Talented and Inspiring Sister on many levels. Through wonderfull discussions, ritual theatre, gatherings and of course on the dance floor! Luna's Ecstatic Dance workshops are one of those experiences that are hard to describe in words. She takes you on a journey into the centre of your being and when she brings you back again you will never be the same. Movement, Spirit, Joy, Power, Love, Connection, Just a small list of what you will experience in one of Luna's workshops. Just Listen to the Beat that is Your Heart, and Dance, Dance, Dance!

hey... just wanted to tell you, your ecstatic dance workshop at in:vision was AWESOME! that was one of the total high points of the weekend for me. I burned through more energy in that hour than i did in all of the dancing i did saturday night, and as was doing it, i knew that i wasn't going to have much left, and just didn't care, because it felt GOOD! thanks for being you.

much love, fish, music producer, Vancouver

Hello Luna,
my name is Sitka, and I danced at your ekstasis dance workshop in Portland two weeks ago, and I have to say that I have NEVER seen a dance floor so transformed before. the energy that i witnessed on that dance floor completely blew my mind, and i could feel it vibrating through my body. and i don't know how you did it. it was amazing. i've danced a lot - most recently at a lot of psytrance gatherings - but people never get that liberated and open and crazy and tribal and connected at normal psytrance parties. so it completely blew my mind. and i am an ecstatic dancer

Luna, thank you so much for coming here. I think you know that what you created was a truly rare and special thing. It was such a tremendous gift for so many in this community. I really hope we get to work together in the future--and that next time I have a chance to participate in your workshop.
Blessings, Elliot, event organizer, Portland, OR

Luna’s Dances of Ekstasis harnesed intention within the dance space, and ignited people into a heart based consciousness with proffesional fluidity. Luna’s workshop will open the Portal stage every evening this year because her compassion and honour of our highest potental is activated and radiated for all who participate. I loved her festival workshop so much that when she facillitated a workshop in Vancouver on Kundalini Dance I made sure to make to every session. Thank-you Luna for sharing in your magic.

i dont know how many of y'all have witnessed this poem before, but i found it in a pile-of-past a couple nights ago, it was gifted to me at some kinda flowfreedance session a buncha years ago, one of the first times i was surrounded by resonant vibrational dance familee...

blessings to us all, love & radiance through the shiftings, may we stay strong & lightlightlight!

here's zee poem:

Dance when you're broken open.
Dance if you've torn the bandage off.
Dance in the middle of the fighting.
Dance in your blood.
Dance when you're perfectly free.
Struck, the dancers hear a tambourine inside them,
as a wave turns to foam on its very top, begin.
Maybe you don't hear that tambourine,
or the tree leaves clapping time.
Close the ears on your head
that listen mostly to lies and cynical jokes.
There are other things to hear and see:
dance-music and a brilliant city
inside the Soul.

Curious: Is anyone familiar with any specific kind of Dance attributed to Faerie? Currently operating under the hypothesis that Faerie is a wavelength of consciousness, one that appears to be making a resurgence in our species these days...

Anyway, I'm a young Ecstatic Dancer just beginning to find his/her way, and this may assist me.

Entheogenic dances

Has anyone researched historical or developed entheogenic sacred dances?

I think i've heard of dances that go along with dmt. I am trying to distinguish between dancing on substances and creating dances that are intended to work with entheogens for specific purposes.
